MySpace Comes to T-Mobile Sidekick

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 / T-Mobile Sidekick iD

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 T-Mobile Sidekick iD
T-Mobile and MySpace today announced MySpace Mobile for the T-Mobile Sidekick, designed to deliver the MySpace experience to Sidekick users.

MySpace Mobile is made possible on the T-Mobile Sidekick through two components. The first component is the client software, being made available for download in a staged rollout to the T-Mobile Sidekick user base throughout the next several weeks. The second component is the service that powers the application. Danger has created a private interconnection to MySpace, whereby each user can access all of his or her account data and interact with friends in real-time. Additional MySpace Mobile features include:

Customized User Interface (UI)

The new service has pertinent information including new messages, friend requests and comments located in one easy-to-navigate home screen. To use other aspects of the service, users simply navigate through the four main sections of the application: Home, MyMail, Blog and Search. The Sidekick's directional pad allows users to jump easily from each activity without waiting for a page to load.

Real-time Updates

MySpace Mobile users can stay signed in to MySpace even when they are on the go with their T-Mobile Sidekick. Real-time features include:

- Profile editing, which allows users to edit their MySpace profile directly from the MySpace application, quickly and easily, wherever they are. Profile updates are immediately reflected on the MySpace Web site.

- Optimized photo management, which empowers users to - with the click of a button - upload photos with captions from their T-Mobile Sidekick photo galleries, directly to MySpace.

- Full-featured MySpace messaging, including push content and notifications powered by the Danger service. The service automatically pushes content, such as new friend requests or new messages, to the end user, meaning that users are notified of new MySpace activity even when they are using other T-Mobile Sidekick applications. This changes the interaction paradigm from request/ response (as it is via the browser today) to real-time, push messaging.

- The application will provide "Online Now" status for a user's friends who are online, further advancing the "always-on" model.

- Users can read, reply to or post comments to the profiles and photos of friends, as well as read and reply to comments on their own profiles.

This week, T-Mobile will begin a multi-week rollout of the new application to T-Mobile Sidekick users. T-Mobile customers can access and subscribe to the service through the Download Catalog. The new service will be available to all Sidekick 3 and Sidekick iD users by the end of October.

Sony Ericsson K770i 3.2MP Camera Phone Revealed

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Sony Ericsson today announced the K770i Cyber-shot phone, an all in-one digital camera, photo album and phone.

At just 14.5 mm slim and finished in a Truffle Brown color, the K770i can take photos comparable to a standalone digital camera. By sliding open the lens cover, users are ready to snap photos. Once in camera mode the 1.9-inch screen becomes the viewfinder, and the Cyber-shot based menu becomes visible displaying eight lit icons across the keypad. These serve as 1-click shortcuts to each of the camera's key functions, such as picture size and photo light. Also able to capture video, the camera comes with a powerful photo light for indoor photo-taking and filming. For spontaneous snapshots with poor light conditions, a Photo fix option offers PC-free photo editing on the phone.

A slide show feature lets users show photos to people who are around, while options to post pictures to a 'blogsite' or online gallery are also included.

Consumers can transfer photos swiftly from the K770i Cyber-shot phone to a PC or laptop by using the USB cable provided in-box. Alternatively, if they prefer to print the pictures, the 3.2-megapixel camera with auto-focus delivers picture quality that is good enough to print photos out at upto A4 size (297 mm x 210 mm). Users can even connect the K770i direct to a printer using PictBridge for PC-free printing.

Supporting Memory Stick Micro (M2), the K770i comes with a 256 MB memory card that lets consumers store up to 200 photos of the best quality. Peruse the photo album whilst listening to favorite music tracks on the in-built media player. Or tune in to the FM radio with RDS that seeks out clear reception on-the-move.

Users who invest in a Stereo Bluetooth Headset will be able to stream music wirelessly from the phone and enjoy songs handsfree. The Stereo Bluetooth Headset HBH-DS200 can be auto-paired with the K770i and offers up to 6 hours of talktime or music listening time.

The K770i is a GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 phone that will be available in Truffle Brown in selected markets from autumn 2007.

Sprint to Introduce the Airave for Enhanced In-Home Coverage

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

One of the big complaints lodged against wireless phone companies is poor signal quality inside buildings, especially homes. Sprint is trying to overcome that obstacle with a device that boosts wireless signals indoors and directs the calls over the Internet.

Photo: Sprint to Introduce the Airave for Enhanced In-Home Coverage Photo 1The Sprint Airave is the first commercially available femtocell, a compact base station that works with any Sprint phone and a broadband Internet connection to provide enhanced in-home wireless coverage plus unlimited calling.

"With the Airave, Sprint is delivering an enhanced in-home coverage solution that's simple to access, low in cost and compatible with any Sprint phone," said Ajit Bhatia, director of product management for Sprint. "In addition, with unlimited in-home wireless calling, the Airave makes it even more convenient for customers to rely on their Sprint phones at home."

With the Sprint Airave by Samsung, Sprint customers can:

- Get enhanced coverage in their homes
- Talk all they want while in their homes, without worrying about using their wireless minutes. Unlimited incoming and outgoing calls and nationwide long distance are included while using a Sprint phone at home
- Take advantage of enhanced coverage and unlimited home calling without having to purchase a new phone. All Sprint phones are compatible with the Airave
- Reduce their monthly communication expenses. Airave service is priced at just $15 per month for individuals and $30 per month for families, in addition to the customer's regular wireless voice plan
- Easily install the device using their existing broadband Internet service and a power outlet
- Have their calls automatically transferred back to the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network when they leave home

Starting today, Sprint customers in select areas of Denver and Indianapolis will be able to purchase the Airave at area Sprint stores for $49.99. Sprint plans to make the Airave available later this year to customers in the remainder of Denver and Indianapolis, along with Nashville, and to customers nationwide in 2008.

Social Networking Will Go Mobile, Study Says

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Social networking services will dominate a burgeoning market for mobile user-generated content, according to a new report from Juniper Research.

Globally, end-user generated revenues from social networking, dating and personal content delivery services will increase from $572m in 2007 to more than $5.7bn in 2012, with social networking accounting for 50% of the total by the end of the forecast period.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, "Even though social networking sites are in their infancy, the exponential growth experienced by a number of mobile service providers - in some cases achieved primarily through viral marketing - would seem to affirm that there is huge potential in this area. The key challenge now is for those providers to monetise that interest."

Holden added that, in the medium term, the highest levels of growth could well be experienced in developing markets with limited fixed broadband access.
"In these markets, the mobile phone is becoming the predominant means by which people access the internet. Hence, the overwhelming majority of online social networking will be conducted via the handset rather than the PC."

Juniper Research assesses the current and future status of mobile user-generated content based on interviews, case studies and analysis from representatives of some of the leading organisations in the growing mobile user-generated content industry.

Other findings from the report include:

- The number of active users of mobile social networking sites is expected to rise from 14m in 2007 to nearly 600m in 2012
- Mobile dating and chatroom services currently account for 57% of user-generated revenues, although this proportion will fall to 21% by 2012 as other UGC services increase in popularity
- The volume of downloads from mobile personal content delivery sites such as SeeMeTV are expected to rise from less than 200m in 2007 to more than 9bn in 2012
- Off-portal social networking sites will increasingly opt for free-to-consumer, ad-funded business models to gain visibility and market presence
- High data charges remain a key hurdle to mass service adoption

Nokia Buys mobile Ad Company Enpocket

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Nokia today said it will buy Enpocket, a U.S.-based mobile advertising company, in a bid to expand its role in Internet services. Nokia plans to leverage Enpocket's platform and partnerships with advertisers, publishers and operators, in addition to gaining a team with strong expertise in global mobile advertising.

"Nokia has already announced its intention to be a leading company in consumer Internet services and we believe that mobile advertising will be an important element in monetizing those services for our customers and partners. Enpocket's mature leading edge platform and people expertise are a strong fit with Nokia existing capabilities in the mobile advertising market," said Tero Ojanpera, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia. "This acquisition is a game changing move to bring the reach and depth of Nokia to organize the market across the world, and make it easier for an ecosystem to develop."

Enpocket is a privately-owned company, established in 2001 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The innovative technology that drives the Enpocket platform is a mobile advertising campaign management and delivery system distinguished by advanced consumer insight, targeting, and measurement. The platform can deliver mobile advertising across multiple formats including SMS, MMS, mobile Internet advertising, and video. Enpocket is powering mobile advertising for leading mobile operators and publishers across the globe and has an ad sales force that is working with large brands.

"Effective interactive advertising on the mobile device can create tremendous value for the mobile industry while bringing new Internet services to people around the world," said Enpocket President and Chief Executive Officer, Mike Baker. "Enpocket and Nokia are combining to provide the leadership needed to define, build and standardize globally the business of mobile advertising so that brands can easily and efficiently engage consumers on their personal devices."

The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Cell Phones Won't Kill Your Brain

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Cell phone use does not appear to be hazardous to human health, according to U.K. study published today, though research gaps mean that the possibility of adverse health effects arising from mobile phone use cannot be entirely dismissed.

The Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) Programme's 2007 Report, a six year research program found no correlation between short term mobile phone use and brain cancer.

"None of the research supported by the Programme and published so far demonstrates that biological or adverse health effects are produced by radiofrequency exposure from mobile phones," the report concludes. "Reassuringly, no epidemiological association was found between short-term mobile phone use (less than ten years) and cancers of the brain and nervous system."

Concerns about the long-term effect of mobile phone use, however, will have to wait to be addressed by future research. "At present, very few people have used mobile phones for more than ten years, so it is not possible at present to rule out the detection of an association at some future date," the report says.

At present, a case-control study of brain cancers in children is being conducted in Sweden. And the MTHR recommends further studies of the long-term effects of mobile phone use, of possible effects on children, and of possible effects of diseases other than cancer, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Finally, the report finds that the while mobile phone use impairs drivers and raises the risk of accidents, the impairment is no greater than other in-car distractions such as talking with passengers or fiddling with the car stereo or air conditioning.

That said, the report offered a caveat: "There were, however, suggestions that the use of a mobile phone may draw on greater cognitive resources than other distractions."

The World Health Organization recommends that "a precautionary approach to the use of mobile phones should be adopted until more scientific evidence on its effects on health becomes available."

Sprint to Offer Online Shopping on Cell Phones

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Sprint customers can now use cell phones to shop for everything from shoes to televisions in a new service the No. 3 wireless company has launched to boost revenue.

The company said today it is providing a mobile Web portal for shoppers to compare prices or buy about 7 million products from 30 online retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores, Target, bluefly.com and shoes.com.

Users can search for a specific product to find which retailer offers it at the lowest price, or they can browse inventory by retailer or category. When they've found a product they're interested in, customers can email the details to themselves for future use, share the details with a friend, or purchase the product right from their phone.

For easy purchasing, customers can set up a Mobile Shopper account right on their phone or on a PC at www.sprint.com/mobileshopper to save their shipping address and credit card information with a secure PIN. To make a purchase, customers select an item and enter their phone number and PIN to apply their saved account information without having to type it in each time. Charges appear on the customer's credit card statement, just as they would for an online purchase made from a PC.

Mobile Shopper is immediately available on most data-enabled Sprint phones, at no additional charge for Sprint data subscribers. To access the service, Sprint customers should select the Web icon on their phone's main menu and type "shop" into the search box. Standard data usage charges apply.
