WOMEN'S COMPETITION OPENS EVENTS IN WORLD MILITARY MODERN PENTATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP

Yane Marques and Larissa Lellys, who will compete in the Pan American Games Rio 2007, will be present in the event

The World Military Modern Pentathlon Competition, a test event for the Pan American Games Rio 2007, starts on Monday, May 14th, with the women’s competition. Six athletes open the quest for the title at 8:30 am, at Deodoro Sports Complex. Five other competitors will participate in the Open Category, including Larissa Lellys and Yane Marques, who will defend Brazil’s colors during the Rio 2007 Games. In total, the competition will have representatives from five countries: Brazil, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, and Guatemala.
During the Military World Championship, CO-RIO will test sports equipments that will be used in the Rio 2007 Modern Pentathlon competition – shooting targets, lanes and swimming competition start blocs, and the fencing field of play. In addition, the technology systems for timekeeping, measurement and local transfer of results will be tested
At 23 years of age, Yane Marques will use the competition as a preparation for the Rio 2007 Games. “I changed some things in the Race competition, a discipline in which I needed to improve. I am anxious to test this new technique in the Military World Championship. Competing in the Games venues will be important to reduce anxiety. Rio 2007 will be a great event, and it will help publicize sports like Modern Pentathlon. Not to mention the venues, which will be crucial to guarantee team renewal and the development of new athletes,” said Marques.
On Tuesday, May 15th, starting at 6:55 am, the World Military Championship men’s competition will be held. Among the 30 athletes are Daniel Santos and Wagner Romão, who will represent Brazil in the Pan American Games Rio 2007. They will compete for the title against athletes from Belarus, Switzerland, Ukraine, Latvia, Italy, Uruguay, Poland, Lithuania, and Chile.

Modern Pentathlon is composed of five sports: Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Equestrian and Race, in this order. All competitions are held on the same day, and individual athletes score at each event. The athlete with the highest overall score after the first four competitions starts the race first. The race start order for the other competitors is defined according to their individual accumulated scoring. Every four points of difference in relation to the top score represent one second of delay at the start line. The first athlete to cross the race’s finish line wins. In the relay competition, each team is composed by three athletes.
