Google Enters Cell Phone Market with Software

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Google today unveiled a new software platform and a broad alliance of mobile handset makers and communications companies in a bid to accelerate the slow development of the mobile internet.

Engineers have been working on the software for three years, dating back to a Silicon Valley startup called Android Inc. that Google acquired in 2005. The mobile software still bears the Android name in acknowledgment of its heritage.

Android is designed to make it easier for developers to create mobile applications that run on many different handsets. At the moment, mobile technology is fragmented, relying on a several different operating systems and development environments. That has reduced the potential market for developers creating games, entertainment or other services for any one handset.

The alliance members come from the telecom and wireless software industries. Many of them are second-tier players that Google hopes will use the phone technology to build devices that can challenge the likes of Nokia, Apple and Verizon Wireless.

The list of wireless carriers that have agreed to provide service for the Google-powered phone in the United States include Sprint Nextel and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile in the United States. China Mobile, Telefonica in Spain and Telecom Italia are among the carriers that have signed on to provide service outside the United States.

They are among a Google-led group of 34 companies that have formed the Open Handset Alliance. Other key players include major chip makers like Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Broadcom and Nvidia.

What Google gets in return is more real estate for selling ads. Ninety-nine percent of Google's revenues come from ads, either the ones it puts next to free Internet-based services like search and email, or through syndication on third-party Web pages. The bigger the Internet gets, Google executives figure, the more pages there are for ads and the more people will need search (with more ads) to find anything.

MySpace Comes to T-Mobile Sidekick

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 / T-Mobile Sidekick iD

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 T-Mobile Sidekick iD
T-Mobile and MySpace today announced MySpace Mobile for the T-Mobile Sidekick, designed to deliver the MySpace experience to Sidekick users.

MySpace Mobile is made possible on the T-Mobile Sidekick through two components. The first component is the client software, being made available for download in a staged rollout to the T-Mobile Sidekick user base throughout the next several weeks. The second component is the service that powers the application. Danger has created a private interconnection to MySpace, whereby each user can access all of his or her account data and interact with friends in real-time. Additional MySpace Mobile features include:

Customized User Interface (UI)

The new service has pertinent information including new messages, friend requests and comments located in one easy-to-navigate home screen. To use other aspects of the service, users simply navigate through the four main sections of the application: Home, MyMail, Blog and Search. The Sidekick's directional pad allows users to jump easily from each activity without waiting for a page to load.

Real-time Updates

MySpace Mobile users can stay signed in to MySpace even when they are on the go with their T-Mobile Sidekick. Real-time features include:

- Profile editing, which allows users to edit their MySpace profile directly from the MySpace application, quickly and easily, wherever they are. Profile updates are immediately reflected on the MySpace Web site.

- Optimized photo management, which empowers users to - with the click of a button - upload photos with captions from their T-Mobile Sidekick photo galleries, directly to MySpace.

- Full-featured MySpace messaging, including push content and notifications powered by the Danger service. The service automatically pushes content, such as new friend requests or new messages, to the end user, meaning that users are notified of new MySpace activity even when they are using other T-Mobile Sidekick applications. This changes the interaction paradigm from request/ response (as it is via the browser today) to real-time, push messaging.

- The application will provide "Online Now" status for a user's friends who are online, further advancing the "always-on" model.

- Users can read, reply to or post comments to the profiles and photos of friends, as well as read and reply to comments on their own profiles.

This week, T-Mobile will begin a multi-week rollout of the new application to T-Mobile Sidekick users. T-Mobile customers can access and subscribe to the service through the Download Catalog. The new service will be available to all Sidekick 3 and Sidekick iD users by the end of October.

T-Mobile Wins German Apple iPhone Deal

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Deutsche Telekom's mobile phone division, T-Mobile, will sell Apple's iPhone in Germany for 399 euros ($558) each, the companies said today. Making its debut in Germany on November 9, the iPhone combines three devices into one - a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and a mobile Internet device - all based on Apple's multi-touch interface and software that allows users to control the iPhone with just a tap, flick or pinch of their fingers.

Apple iPhone"We're thrilled to be partnering with T-Mobile to bring the iPhone to Germany," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Customer response to iPhone in the US has been incredible, and we can't wait to introduce T-Mobile customers to the most revolutionary mobile device on the planet."

"We are convinced that we can get our customers excited about experiencing the mobile internet with the iPhone," said Hamid Akhavan, CEO, T-Mobile International. "I am proud that Apple and T-Mobile have become partners. The best mobile device currently on the market will soon be operating on the best network in the country."

iPhone users in Germany will have access to Apple's latest music offerings on iPhone including the recently launched iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store offers customers the ability to browse, search, preview, purchase and download songs and albums from iTunes over the built-in Wi-Fi on their iPhone. No computer is required and when the customer connects their iPhone back with the PC or Mac, their music automatically syncs back into their iTunes library.

The T-Mobile network will also support iPhone's unique Visual Voicemail feature, which enables users to immediately randomly access those messages that interest them most.

By the end of 2007, T-Mobile will be the only network operator in Germany to offer EDGE throughout its entire GSM network. EDGE accelerates the mobile data transfer rate to over 220 Kilobits per second, which makes it almost four times as fast as ISDN in fixed-line networks. With EDGE, the German market leader offers its customers 100 percent broadband. With 20,000 HotSpots worldwide, T-Mobile is the biggest Wi-Fi provider in the world. Of those HotSpots, 8,600 are in Germany, where HotSpot users can achieve download speeds of up to 11 megabytes per second.

Frequent Cell Phone Use May Slow Brain Function

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

A study says frequent cell phone users demonstrated slowed brain function but it was still considered within normal brain functioning.

Earlier studies have mostly investigated the acute effects of cell phone use on brain function. However, this study employed an epidemiological approach to investigate the long-term effects of cell phone use on brain function. In this study data was used from 300 people of which 100 were 'frequent cell phone users', 100 'non-cell phone users' and an 'intermediate group' of 100 people.

Differences in brain activity (measured using QEEG or quantative EEG), Neuropsychological functions such as attention, memory and executive function and personality traits were assessed. The results show that frequent cell phone users score higher on extraversion. Furthermore, frequent cell phone users showed improved focused attention. This was explained by a learning effect due to making more phone calls in busy environments, whereby people learn to focus better on the phone call and filter out irrelevant environmental information. However, the brain activity from frequent cell phone users shows more slow activity (increased Delta and Theta) and a slowing of the Alpha Peak Frequency. These effects could not be explained by the differences in personality and focused attention. "In Alzheimer's dementia you also find a severely slowing of brain activity.

However, the slowing found in this study, with cell phone users, can still be considered within 'normal' limits" according to Martijn Arns, the main investigator. "The frequent cell phone user group used their cell phone - at the time of data collection - only 2.4 years on average which can currently be considered as a short time. Therefore, it is to be expected that the observed effects in this study can be more severe with prolonged cell phone use" according to Martijn Arns.

Future studies should point out whether this effect can be replicated in larger groups, with prolonged cell phone use and whether this slowed brain activity is to be considered as an adverse health effect or not.

This study was carried out by researchers from Brainclinics Diagnostics and the Radboud University department of Biological Psychology both from Nijmegen (the Netherlands), the Institute of Psychiatry (London) and the Brain Resource Company Ltd. (Sydney).

Laser Technology Leads to Better Cell Phones Displays

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

UCLA chemists working at the nanoscale have developed technology which could lead to brighter cell phone displays with less power consumption. The new, inexpensive means forces luminescent polymers to give off polarized light and confines it to produce polymer-based lasers.

The researchers, Sarah Tolbert and Benjamin J. Schwartz, have succeeded in taking semiconducting polymers - plastics that consist of long chains of atoms that work as semiconductors - and stretching them out in a silica (glass) host matrix so that they have new optical properties.

"If you have polymer chains that can wiggle like spaghetti, it's hard to make them all point in the same direction," Tolbert said. "What we do is take tiny, nanometer-sized holes in a piece of glass and force the polymer chains into the holes. The holes are so small that the spaghetti chains have no space to coil up. They have to lie straight, and all the chains end up pointing in the same direction."

Because the chains point in the same direction, they absorb polarized light and give off polarized light. Lining up the polymer chains also provides advantages for laser technology, because all the chains can participate in the lasing process, and they can make the light polarized without the need for any external optical elements, Tolbert said.

"Our new materials exploit the fact that the polymer chains are all lined up to make them into lasers that function very differently from lasers made out of random polymers," Schwartz said.

The manner in which the polymer chains incorporate into the porous glass of the silica matrix helps to confine the light in the material, enhancing the lasing process by producing what is known as a "graded-index waveguide." In most lasers, confining the light is typically done with external mirrors.

"Our materials don't need mirrors to function as lasers, because the material that's lasing is also serving to confine the light," Schwartz said.

In combination, the alignment of the polymer chains and the confinement of the light make it 20 times easier for the new materials to lase than if a randomly oriented polymer sample were used. And because polymers can be dissolved easily in solvents, they are inexpensive to process. The glass host matrix with the aligned nanoscale pores is also inexpensive to produce.

"Usually polarized and cheap don't go together," Tolbert said.

The research opens the possibility of additional applications for the new materials as a brighter polarized source for displays in products with LED-type displays, including cell phones.

"If you take an inexpensive light source with which you could excite the aligned polymer chains and get the chains to reemit, you potentially have a more efficient way to generate polarized light." Tolbert said. "This would allow displays to be brighter with less power consumption, and you could get longer battery life."

Apple announced today that O2 will be the exclusive UK carrier for Apple's iPhone when it makes its debut in the UK on November 9. The iPhone combines three devices into one - a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and the best mobile Internet device ever - all based on Apple's revolutionary multi-touch interface and pioneering software that allows users to control iPhone with just a tap, flick or pinch of their fingers. Apple sold its one millionth iPhone just 74 days after it went on sale in the US on June 29.

Apple iPhoneiPhone users in the UK will be able to activate their new iPhones using Apple's popular iTunes software running on a PC or Mac computer in the comfort and privacy of their own home or office, without having to wait in a store while their phone is activated. Activating iPhone takes only minutes as iTunes guides the user through simple steps to choose their tariff, undertake a credit check and activate their iPhone. Once iPhone is activated, users can then easily sync all of their phone numbers and other contact information, calendars, email accounts, web browser bookmarks, music, photos, podcasts and TV shows just like they do when they sync their iPods with iTunes.

In addition to all the features that made iPhone so popular in the US, iPhone users in the UK will have access to Apple's latest music offerings on iPhone including the recently launched iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store offers customers the ability to browse, search, preview, purchase and download songs and albums from iTunes over the built-in Wi-Fi on their iPhone. No computer is required and when the customer connects their iPhone back with their PC or Mac, their music automatically syncs back into their iTunes library.

The iPhone is scheduled to go on sale on November 9 and will be sold exclusively in the UK through Apple's retail and online stores, O2 and The Carphone Warehouse's retail and online stores. The iPhone will be available in an 8 GB model for 269 pounds (inc VAT) and will work with either a PC or Mac.

Sprint, Microsoft Deliver Mobile Search Innovations

PlanetaCelular tecnologia e mobilidade

Sprint and Microsoft today provided customers with a fully integrated GPS location-aware mobile search service on Sprint phones. Voice search by Live Search for mobile using Tellme technologies will also be available on select Sprint phones as a separate download. The new services enable people to find Web, local, and phone content easily using traditional input methods or voice.

With the enhanced mobile search service launching today, Sprint customers can now:

- Search the entire Web, local listings and maps, and Sprint's mobile content catalogue using the same familiar search box powered by Live Search, on the Sprint mobile Web home page.
- Use Sprint's built-in GPS capabilities to automatically find local businesses and listings nearby quickly and easily without needing to manually enter location information. The new GPS-enabled search allows customers to give permission to let their phone automatically identify their location to return nearby business search results, such as the closest gas station, pizza place or movie theatre - all by simply typing in or, on select phones, speaking the name or category of business for which they are searching.

Additionally, Sprint launched GPS-enabled voice search capabilities, which are powered by Live Search for mobile. Customers can say the business listing and then see the search results on the screen. This feature uses voice user interface design from Microsoft's recent acquisition Tellme.

Sprint and Microsoft initially announced their strategic alliance in November 2006, when the companies launched combined mobile content and local listings search capabilities and committed to delivering GPS-enabled search.
