SANDRIS SIKA, AN ATHLETE FROM LATVIA, WINS MODERN PENTATHLON MILITARY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Daniel Santos, who will defend Brazil in the Pan American Games Rio 2007, is ranked in eighth place and is the best Brazilian athlete in the competition

Daniel Santos, from Rio Grande do Sul, ranked in eighth place, was the best ranked Brazilian athlete in men’s competition of Modern Pentathlon Military World Championship, held on Tuesday, 15, at Deodoro Sports Complex. The winner of the competition was Sandris Sika, from Latvia. The relay event is been disputed this Wednesday , with the participation of nine male team and three female teams. The Military World Championship is the test event for the Pan American Games Rio 2007.

During the Military World Championship, the Pan American Games Rio 2007 Organizing Committee (CO-RIO) is testing sport implements that will be used in the event of Modern Pentathlon of Rio 2007 – shooting targets, courses and swimming pool starting blocks, and the fencing track. Additionally, technological systems for timekeeping, measuring and local transfer of results will be tested.

As well as Wagner Romão, from Sergipe, ranked in 11th place in the Military World Championship, Daniel Santos has his place guaranteed in the Brazilian team of Modern Pentathlon that will dispute the Rio 2007. In the Pan American Games of Santo Domingo, in 2003, he was ranked in sixth place. “It was the last competition preparing for the Pan American Games. Now that I know the course, I will outline my strategy. The swimming pool is quite quick”, said Daniel.

Wagner Romão believes his participation in the Military World Championship will be an advantage in the dispute of the Pan American Games. “I am optimistic for the Games, since the Military World Championship served to demystify the facilities. Modern Pentathlon has been privileged for having a competition in these facilities. Such advantage is a differential for us in the Games. In the next two months I will undergo a strong physical preparation”, said Romão.

For Alexandre França, coach of the Brazilian team of Modern Pentathlon, the Military World Championship was a good test in the preparation for the Rio 2007. In the female dispute, the two athletes qualified, Yane Marques and Larissa Lellys were ranked first and second, respectively. “It as a control competition, a good test for the Games. We checked some details and defined the strategies. Equestrian floor, for instance, is different”, explained Alexandre.

The champion Sandris Sika complimented the facilities of Deodoro Sports Complex. “The facilities of this competition are very nice. The race was my greatest difficulty in this event, said Sandris.

Modern Pentathlon consists of five sports: Shooting, Fencing, Swimming, Equestrian and Race, in this order. All events are held on the same day and individual competitors get scores in each event. The athlete with the greatest number of scores after the four first events is the first to start in the racecourse. The starting order of the other competitors is defined according to the accrued score. Each four scores of difference for the leader correspond to one waiting second at the starting line. The first athlete to cross the finish line at the end of the race is the winner.

In the relay event, which will end the championship, each team is composed by three members. Each athlete runs half of the traditional Modern Pentathlon event. The athlete with the greatest number of scores after the four first events is the first to start in the racecourse. The starting order of the other competitors is defined according to the accrued score. Each four scores of difference for the leader correspond to one waiting second at the starting line. Each athlete must run 1.500m in relay system. The first team that completes the 4.500m wins the competition.
