Motorola’s wi4 Fixed Wireless Broadband Portfolio Creates Opportunities in Newly Available 5.4 GHz Spectrum

Innovative Canopy® PMP and PTP solutions support high-bandwidth data, video and voice applications

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – 01 October, 2007 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the launch of its 5.4 GHz Canopy Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) and Point-to-Point (PTP) wireless broadband solutions in the United States and Canada. Part of the MOTOwi4™ portfolio, the new offerings will provide network operators, enterprises, government, and commercial customers with access to additional spectrum, enabling bandwidth-intensive data, voice and video communications.

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) recently opened the 5.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) for commercial use, making more spectrum available to meet growing demands for bandwidth. The 5.4 GHz spectrum offers 255 MHz of bandwidth, double that available in the 5.8 GHz band. This allows for the co-location of multiple radios on one rooftop or location with minimal interference simplifying overall network design.

“Our network infrastructure currently consists of Canopy Point-to-Multipoint access modules and the Point-to-Point product for backhaul. The introduction of Motorola’s 5.4 GHz unlicensed solutions will provide us with additional opportunities to leverage this newly available spectrum,” said Brian Magnuson, president, Cascade Networks, Inc. “These products bring more opportunities and greater flexibility as more radios can co-locate on existing infrastructure.”

The 5.4 GHz PTP 400 and PTP 600 unlicensed products provide reliable, high-bandwidth and high-speed connectivity to support convergent, multimedia applications such as data transfer, Voice over IP (VoIP), video surveillance and audio downloads. It also provides a powerful backhaul solution for Canopy PMP and mesh networks and PTP links where wired access is not available or is cost-prohibitive.

The Canopy 5.4 GHz product provides a greenfield opportunity in the U.S. and Canada, for business and residential service providers that require additional bandwidth to support services such as data transfer, video streaming, VoIP and gaming while conserving tower costs.

Both the Canopy 5.4 GHz and the 5.4 GHz PTP 400 & 600 Series Integrated Systems comply with power restrictions in the U.S.and Canada. They also easily integrate with other wireless systems in the 5 GHz spectrum, including the MOTOwi4 portfolio of broadband wireless solutions that includes Fixed Broadband, WiMAX, Mesh, Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) and enterprise WLAN for public and private networks.

Motorola will be introducing the new 5.4 GHz product line at its annual channel conference for authorized channel partners in Palm Springs, CA October 1-4th.

T-Mobile today unveiled the Sidekick Slide, a messaging device with a new slide open mechanism, rather than the conventional swivel.

Designed by Motorola rather than Sharp, the Sidekick Slide will be available later this fall. With a new look and feel for the Sidekick family, the Sidekick Slide debuts a smaller design featuring a slide up QVGA screen, a compact QWERTY keyboard, full Sidekick messaging technology, and a black finish with deep purple accents.

Featuring a vivid 2.5-inch QVGA screen, the Sidekick Slide also offers an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera, music player, microSD card slot support of 4 GB cards, Bluetooth wireless technology, and data transfer over T-Mobile's EDGE network. European-Funded Research End-To-End Reconfigurability (E2R) Integrated Programme to Discuss Achievements And Impact

PARIS, France, 29 June 2007 – Motorola Labs’ European Communications Research announced today that European Integrated Project “End-to-End Reconfigurability” (E2R II) (www.e2r.motlabs.com) will be showcased at the IST Mobile and Wireless Summit 07 from 1st to 5th of July 2007 in Budapest (www.mobilesummit2007.org).

With the potential to revolutionize wireless just as the PC revolutionized computing, E2R II is partly funded by the European Commission and led by Motorola. Bringing together key players in the domain of reconfigurability, software defined radio (SDR), and cognitive radio systems (CRS), E2R II is seen by the wireless industry as a core technology to enable the full potential of beyond 3G systems. Key achievements will be showcased during the forthcoming IST Summit conference through 8 demonstrations, 21 papers presentations and posters and 1 tutorial.

E2R II Project Impact Building on the success of the first phase, E2R II is developing, demonstrating and validating technologies that enable a true seamless experience based on reconfigurable heterogeneous systems. The project is pursuing research into the most promising directions towards removing walls (current technical and regulatory limitations) and building bridges (technical) in order to facilitate the vision of true end-to-end connectivity. Some of the key E2R II research achievements include:

Unified Business Model and Responsibility Chain,

End-to-End Reconfigurability System Architecture and Self-ware Reconfiguration Management Plane,

Flexible Spectrum Management / Dynamic Spectrum Allocation solution from technical,
regulatory and business perspectives,

Functional Architecture and inherent solutions for optimized exploitation of spectrum and radio resources, encompassing Dynamic Network Planning and Management, Advanced Spectrum

Management and Joint Radio Resource Management in the context of reconfigurable/cognitive B3G infrastructures,

Reconfigurable Equipment Platform Independent Model, Equipment Management and Control Architecture and Reconfigurable Equipment Management System,

Cognitive Pilot Channel,

Reconfiguration Language, Functional Description Language.

The project is actively contributing to the introduction of concepts and solutions in the standardization arena (e.g. IEEE P1900.4, ETSI, OMG, OMA, ITU...).

E2R II at IST Mobile and Wireless Summit

For the fourth consecutive year, E2R II will provide important, high quality contributions to the IST Mobile and Wireless Summit. The E2R II booth will include eight demonstrations of all the essential technologies for reconfigurable/cognitive wireless networks and systems. Specifically, the E2R II booth will exhibit:

Reconfigurable components and systems: Optimal data (video) transfers through transparent reconfigurations of OFDM-based Radio Access Technologies, running on FPGA platforms (FAUST boards) and multi-core SoCs encompassing GPPs, ASIPs and DSPs,

Reconfigurable protection of terminals: Security mechanisms able to be adapted to match variations in the security context, like a change of access network,

Reconfigurable network elements: Flexible Base Stations capable of dynamically altering the
Radio Access Technologies and spectrum they operate,

Management of reconfigurable network elements and segments: Optimal planning and policy-based management of heterogeneous B3G (HSDPA, WiMAX, WiFi) network infrastructures,

Management of reconfigurable terminals: Terminal devices exploiting heterogeneous B3G (2.5G, HSDPA, WiMAX, WiFi) infrastructures,

Proof of concept on the E2R II System Architecture and Self-ware Reconfiguration Management Plane,

Efficient control and implementation of reconfigurations: Handovers, load balancing, multi-homing mechanisms, in heterogeneous wireless access infrastructures, by exploiting Stream Control Transmission Protocol mechanisms,

Apple ha comunicato che il telefono che ha fatto più parlare di se negli ultimi tempi verrà commercializzato in Usa a fine giugno, in Europa verso fine anno e in Asia nel 2008.

In molti sostengono che le strategie di mercato per l'Europa saranno diverse rispetto a quella degli Stati Uniti, dove l'iPhone verrà distribuito con un accordo esclusivo con l'operatore Cingular Wireless (At&t). In Europa, con un mercato più frammentato di quello d'oltreoceano, non dovrebbe ripetersi l'esclusiva a un unico operatore. Inoltre in Europa è ben diffuso il network di terza generazione Umts/Hsdpa difficilmente la versione per il vecchio continente del telefono Apple tralascerà questa differenza. In caso di un iPhone Umts, i più probabili operatori sarebbero H3G e T-Mobile.
